Whitening is one of the most cost-effective improvements in dentistry. It is quick, it is non-invasive, and it changes how a smile reads in a photograph more than almost anything else at the same price.

Why professional whitening is different

Drugstore kits are cheap and easy to find. They are also weaker, and — more importantly — they are not fitted to your mouth. A one-size tray leaks gel onto your gums and misses the surfaces you actually wanted whitened, which is why results are so often patchy.

Professional whitening uses a stronger agent in a tray made for your teeth, supervised by a dentist who has looked in your mouth first. That last part matters: whitening an untreated cavity or an area of exposed root causes real discomfort, and we would rather find that before you start than after.

What whitening will and will not fix

Whitening works well on the yellowing and staining that comes from age, coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. It does not change the colour of existing crowns, veneers, bridges or fillings — those are matched to your shade when they are made, so if you plan to whiten, whiten first and then match the restorations to the new shade.

Some discolouration is intrinsic — built into the tooth structure rather than sitting on it — and will resist whitening. If that is what you have, veneers, bonding or porcelain crowns are the honest answer, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a treatment that will disappoint you.
